Hair Loss In Men And Remedies

The majority of American men will be aware of some hair loss by the age of 35. By age 50, nearly 85% of men will have experienced thinning hair. A quarter of the men who experience this loss begin before they reach the age of 21. And 95% of this hair loss is male pattern baldness.

Most men who suffer from hair loss have a lot of attention on the situation, and are willing to try whatever is available to change it. Some change jobs because of it. Their relationships are affected. Every facet of their lives is affected and they are most unhappy with this state of affairs.

The vast majority of hair loss treatments being marketed today are nothing more than “snake oil.” You may have seen the ads in the back of men’s magazines, you’ve heard the commercials on the radio, and you’ve seen the infomercials promoting miracle treatments for hair loss. Most of these treatments are about as reliable as using extract of goat testicles to treat impotence.

There are also a myriad of false reasons bandied about concerning why hair loss occurs. Anxiety? No. Wearing a cap (even sleeping in a cap)? No. Nutritional insufficiency? No. Wearing a ponytail? No. Excess sweating? No. Androgenic Alopecia or male pattern hair loss occurs for two reasons – decreasing androgens (male hormones) and genetic predilection.

Since at this time there is no remedy for a genetic predisposition, a workable way to stop hair loss would be to restore the androgens (hormones) to the same level they were when one had a full head of hair – a level of a young man.

There are other symptoms that occur in men as they age, also due to dwindling hormone levels. A decrease in muscle mass and strength and an increase in body fat often occurs. Low energy level, anxiety, restlessness, decreased libido and hopelessness can also occur. The loss of hormones in women is called menopause. In men it is called andropause.

Women have been using hormone replacement therapy for quite some time. More recently it has been found to produce beneficial results in men. Most advantageous health, value of life, and improved life span is a result of a equilibrium of hormones in the body, not just one lone hormone. An important thing to know before embarking on such treatment though is that the replacement hormones must be bio-identical – that is to say, they must be exactly the same as the hormones in the body, not a synthetic or something close.

The first step in seeking hormone replacement therapy would be to see a doctor who specializes in this therapy, and have medical tests done to determine what hormones need to be replaced and in what amount. One can not only slow or stop hair loss with this therapy, but also prevent heart attacks, lower blood pressure, slow the loss of muscle mass, keep the prostate gland healthy and raise libido, to name a few benefits. One can start at any age, but the younger one begins the more benefits result, slowing and in some cases reversing the ravages of time.
